Han Responds to Tsai Cheng-yuan's Smear Campaign|韓國瑜氣憤回應蔡正元 若有收吳錢願辭市長
While attending a report on gas explosion donations at the city council, Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu was asked about an accusation made by Tsai Cheng-yuan that he had accepted NT$ 40 million from Wu Den-yih for election funds. Han angrily responded that he would resign as mayor if the rumor were true. Han also said he has been attacked by smear campaign after smear campaign since becoming mayor and it is becoming unbearable.
If Chair Wu Den-yih really gave Han Kuo-yu NT$ 40 million, I'll resign as Kaohsiung City mayor. I'll say it again. I'll resign as Kaohsiung City mayor. I can make this vow because my character can stand up to scrutiny.
Angered by the latest smear campaign against him, Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu twice vowed to resign if the rumors were true.
On the 25th, former Kuomintang lawmaker Tsai Cheng-yuan posted on Facebook that Wu Den-yih personally raised NT$ 40 million and gave it to Han to fund a presidential run.
An irate Han said he would resign if anyone could produce evidence Tsai's story was true.
Where's the evidence, Tsai Cheng-yuan? I preach love and tolerance, but there's a limit. You can't smear me, kick me, hit me and bite me without consequence. How can you make up something like?
Han said he has had to deal with continuous smear campaigns since becoming mayor and there is only so much anyone can tolerate. In recent days, Han has also had to deal with the Democratic Progressive Party's Kaohsiung City Council caucus calling a press conference to say a land development company owned 49 percent by the Kaohsiung City Government and 51 percent by Taiwan International Ports Corp. had two city government appointees on its board, with one of them being the president of the company. According to the DPP, Cheng Chien-teng got the appointment as a political reward because he was the former secretary of Han's wife when she was a city councilor and previously worked for Han at Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing, and Cheng should have refused the appointment because there was a conflict of interest.
Cheng Chien-teng is a man of mystery. We can't even find a picture of him, but what we have been able to dig up is that he worked for Lee Chia-fen for many years and then worked for Han Kuo-yu.
It was not a political reward. The city council has the right of oversight. If the appointment was illegal and the city council didn't discover anything was wrong, I'd just send the application straight in.
Han said Cheng got the job because of his passion and ability to cope with pressure, and his wife had nothing to do with it. Cheng's appointment will require central approval. Han says he hopes the central government can respect the right of the local government to appoint officials. He also said he welcomes public oversight.
