Drones Dispatched to Combat Dengue Fever|防治登革熱 高雄首採無人機空中噴藥
A total of 28 indigenous cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Kaohsiung. To prevent more cases of cluster infections, health officials conducted aerial spraying and cleanup operations at a fruit and vegetable market. On the other hand, 4 indigenous cases of dengue fever in Tainan have been confirmed. The CDC believes that the four cases belong to the same cluster. Therefore, the East Market in Kaishan Borough has been ordered to shut down on July 4 and July 5 for disinfection operations.
Health Officials prepared the insecticides and used a drone as a tool to spray on the roof of the fruit and vegetable market. This is the first time that a drone was used for dengue fever prevention and control. The machine can spray up to 13 liters of insecticides and it can help disease control personnel to overcome problems that no equipment nor people can solve.
Some roof gutters are as long as 30 meters. Those high-pressure water sprays can only reach up to 10 meters. If we send men up to the roof, the height is about 15 to 20 meters, which is very dangerous. The sprayer also cannot cover an area of 2,000 pings in aerial prevention.
This fruit and vegetable market has 25 roof gutters. When rain fills up the gutters and without direct sunshine, it creates a potential mosquito breeding habitat. The National Mosquito-Borne Disease Control Research Center at the National Health Research Institute has cooperated with GEOSAT Aerospace Technology Inc. to dispatch insecticide spraying drones for free. However, it starting raining shortly after the drone had taken off.
We would like to avoid the rain as much as possible because some parts of the drones are not water-proof. We try our best to let the drones work in light drizzles, but if there's heavy rain, then it is advised not to operate the drones.
The city government expressed that although rain does have an impact on the effect of the spray, it can still last about more than half a month. This is still crucial during the high-risk period. On July 2nd, there is a case of imported dengue fever reported in Kaohsiung. On the 3rd, the Public Health Center in Taiwan announced that another 2-year-old toddler has also been infected with dengue fever.
We think this is a case of regional cluster infection, this is confirmed. As for the type of virus, we will categorize them in the future to see if they are the same type. This will take some time.
The CDC personnel said the 4 confirmed cases in Tainan is considered a regional cluster infection because these 4 people have all visited the East Market in Kaishan Borough. The city government will continue to use insecticide spray to kill mosquitoes to prevent dengue fever. The market will be closed on July 4th and 5th.
