Farmers Letting Consumers Adopt Pomelo Trees|憂心恐滯銷 柚農開放認購文旦樹奏效
Due to the warm winter, this year's produce volume has gone down. However, the volume of Hegang pomelos from Hualien's Ruisui Township has more than doubled this year. Farmers are worried about an excess supply and have therefore started letting the public adopt pomelo trees. Anyone that adopts a tree can keep all the pomelos that grow on it. This has turned out to be very popular with consumers.
This pomelo orchard in Hualien's Hegang is thriving. Although the pomelo harvest usually isn't until the Mid-Autumn Festival, technical upgrades have moved up the harvest period while producing pomelos with a Brix sweetness value of 13.
The high yield this year is due to the wind and sunlight here, and the lack of typhoons.
Farmers worried about an excess supply this year came up with the idea of letting people adopt pomelo trees. Consumers that adopt a tree can keep all the pomelos grown on it. They are also able to visit the orchard and inspect their fruit.
We have been having the pomelos for a few years, so we know how good they are. They're also traceable and we don't have to worry about pesticide residue. (How many trees did you adopt?) We plan to adopt 50.
The Ruisui Farmers Association says there was less rain during the flowering period this year due to the warm winter, which led to a higher yield. As there are currently 800 hectares of pomelo orchards in the district and orders from China have fallen, the association hopes domestic consumers can step up.
Total yield is around 45 million catties, or around 45 million pomelos. This equates to two pomelos per capita in Taiwan.
This is the first time Ruisui is doing anything like this and a dozen orchards are taking part. Anyone interested in adopting a tree and helping farmers can inquire with the Ruisui Farmers Association.
