Compared to 2018, Chinese Valentine's Day Rose Sales Drop 80%|

This year's Chinese Valentine's Day, falls on August 7 which is today. Due to sufficient supplies, the price of the roses is around the same as last year but sales aren't as strong as they used to be

Lush bunches of rose bouquets are most fitting for Valentines. Many florists at The Neihu Taipei Flower Market have placed brightly colored roses on their shelves, but it didn't manage to attract many people.

The willingness to purchase is declining every year, and it's probably because there are more and more replacements. It is also true that the economy has not been great and it has affected the consumer's buying power.

Roses are priced differently according to their variety and stem length. Short-stemmed roses are priced at NT$100 per bunch this year. The average wholesale price for roses is NT$127.1 per bunch this year, around 15 percent more than last year's NT$109.7. The supply and pricing are all fairly stable, but vendors say that its popularity has dropped 80 percent.

The amount of sales, compared to the Feb 14th Valentine's Day, has dropped about 50 percent. If compared to previous years' Chinese Valentine's Day, it has dropped 80 percent because of the economy.

The economy has affected the willingness to purchase, and some councilors are accusing the city government for insufficient marketing efforts. However, the Taipei Flowers Auction company clarified and said that they have been doing promotions all along.

Many district offices have flowers on display. The flowers used are flowers that are in season, with valentine's roses as the main focus to promote them. We also have tried to interact with the community by providing local flower arrangement workshops.

There are now increasing options for gifting on Chinese Valentine's Day which has caused the popularity of florists to slide. How creative marketing can be used to attract consumers, will be the challenge vendors need to face for the next Valentine's Day.
