Taichung, Miaoli Residents Upset over No Typhoon Holiday|全台8縣市停班課 苗栗台中沒放假遭罵翻
Typhoon Lekima is attacking Taiwan. Eight municipalities in Taiwan including Taoyuan and Hsinchu canceled work and school. However, Miaoli County, which is in the same living circle as Taoyuan and Hsinchu, didn't get a typhoon holiday. Many people said they were unhappy about it. Taichung residents also wrote on Facebook that they were unhappy about not getting a typhoon holiday. The Facebook pages of Miaoli County Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang and Taichung City Mayor Lu Shiow-yen were both filled with complaints. Hsu and Lu both said the typhoon holiday standards had not been reached so there was work and school as usual. Weather seems relatively normal around Taiwan, but preventive measures are still being undertaken.
There were intermittent downpours in Miaoli in the morning as people headed to work. Many were upset about not getting a typhoon holiday.
I guess the rules are the rules.
Of course we should get a typhoon holiday if the weather is really bad. Too bad for us it's not that bad.
Miaoli residents questioned why they didn't get a typhoon holiday when people in nearby Hsinchu and Taoyuan did. Only one Miaoli township, Taian, announced a typhoon holiday. Miaoli County Magistrate Hsu Yao-chang's Facebook was inundated with complaints. In response, Hsu said the decision was based on Central Weather Bureau standards.
The county magistrate isn't the one deciding whether to cancel work and class. Certain criteria have to be met. We have to consider both the impact on businesses and the safety of their employees.
Typhoon holiday standards are based on Central Weather Bureau forecasts and where the storm radius may pass within four hours. There has to be an average wind force of Category 7, a maximum wind force of Category 10, and expected rainfall of 350 millimeters. As of 7 p.m. on the 8th, the bureau was forecasting an average wind force of Category 5 to 6 and a maximum wind force of Category 8 to 9 along with rainfall of 200 to 300 millimeters in low-lying areas of Miaoli. Only mountainous areas reached the typhoon holiday rain threshold, which is why Taian was the only township to announce a typhoon holiday. Taichung also failed to reach typhoon holiday standards with a forecasted average wind force of Category 5 to 6 and a maximum wind force of Category 8 to 9.
(Taichung City) didn't meet either the rain or wind threshold for a typhoon holiday. We respect the assessment of the professionals.
The Taichung City Government says although typhoon holiday standards were not met, the disaster response center was activated at 8 p.m. on the 8th and all government agencies are prepared and standing by. No major flooding has been reported so far.
