Several Tainan Districts Flood Due to Thunderstorm|深夜起大雨多處淹水 台南6:13宣布停班課
A severe thunderstorm pummeled Tainan City on the night of Aug. 12, resulting in flooding in several districts. Many residents got up in the middle of the night to put up flood barriers. At 6:13 this morning, the Tainan City Government announced a work and school cancelation.
Heavy rain began pummeling Tainan City with dawn still a few hours away. Some residents waded through the flooded streets to get to their destinations, while others scrambled to move their vehicles to higher ground, fearing the flooding would worsen.
It's almost at waist-level (inside). I'm all wet already.
At 11 p.m. on Aug. 12, a thunderstorm began pounding Kunshan Borough in the city's East District. By 3 a.m., some streets were flooded and the water had advanced to front doors. Many residents got up in the middle of the night to erect flood barriers, although their effect was limited.
It began thundering and raining heavily around 11 p.m. It hasn't stopped raining since.
Once the dawn arrived, cargo trucks entering the city to deliver goods discovered that many roads in East District and Rende District had flooded. Residents were standing in water all over the districts with their vehicles immersed in the water. Many office workers were unable to reach their workplaces, while students arrived at school only to find out that work and school had been canceled.
What else can I do but turn around and go back? I couldn't reach my destination, even though my office is just over there.
As more than four administrative districts were flooded, the Tainan City Government announced a work and school cancelation at 6:13 a.m. However, many people had already left home by then. Mayor Huang Wei-che explained the rainfall kept changing, and this was the earliest the announcement could be made.
Everyone was still discussing this from 5:30 to 6 a.m. We were still discussing the disaster situation and whether the rain would continue. We made the announcement as early as we could, and we tried to announce it before people left home to prevent them from hearing the announcement of the work and school cancelation when they were already on the road.
Many residents who avoided having to traverse flooded streets to get to work praised the mayor online. The city government is currently inspecting the flooded areas, hoping to find ways to improve the situation.
