Taichung's Sanmin Books Closing Its Doors|

Sanmin Book Co. in Taichung City's Fengyuan District first opened 41 years ago. Due to factors including its lease expiring and the difficulties of operating an independent bookstore, the owner has decided to close the store. Many old readers have been visiting the store to recapture old memories. One employee also admits that bookstores can't compete with the internet.

A female customer inhales the scent of the book she is holding and is immediately transported back to her childhood.

As children grow up, they need exam prep materials and come here less. It's only now that my children are grown that I have the free time to come here.

In her youth, Ms. Peng purchased reference books and devoured novels here. She therefore felt nostalgic just entering the bookstore. Over in another corner, another customer says it is very sad the bookstore is closing.

Because most people now read e-books on their phone, and then -- but I still like the feeling of holding and reading physical books.

Since the news broke, the store has had more customers than usual. Some are looking for bargains, while others want to take a stroll down Memory Lane. Sanmin Book Co., located on Zhongzheng Road near Taichung Train Station, first opened 41 years ago. One employee says independent and brick and mortar bookstores simply can't compete with online retailers.

Everyone buys their books online. If we let people read books here, they just leave when they're finished. So -- and then there's a lot of competition in stationery too.

Opened by Democratic Progressive Party heavyweight Lee Chin-hsiang, Sanmin initially specialized in extra-party magazines, Taiwanese literature and sociocultural criticism books. It also supported extra-party movements. While Lee has always kept a low profile, the book selection in the store made his political leanings clear. The store may be closing, but it will live on in the memories of the local community.
