President Unveils First Taiwan-made AJT "Yung-ying"|國造新式高教機出廠 總統掛牌定名"勇鷹"
The Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation has unveiled Taiwan's new domestically manufactured advanced jet trainer on Sept. 24. At the ceremony, President Tsai said although it has been a difficult journey, developing the Jet Trainer locally has been proven to be the right decision.
The newly minted Advanced Jet Trainer is unveiled amid majestic music on September 24th. It's a memorable sight as this trainer jet is also viewed as the beginning of locally-manufactured defense fighter aircraft in Taiwan.
President Tsai Ing-wen, who is also the nation's Commander-in-Chief attended the ceremony and officially named the Jet Trainer "Yung - ying", which was the name that garnered the most votes online.
Flashing a thumbs-up sign while she sat in the cockpit of jet trainer, Tsai said that today is a big day for the Air Force, and also a milestone for the nation's aviation industry where the idea making national defense autonomous is realized.
Although on this journey we were met with many difficulties, defamation and challenges, and even with people believing that we'd fail, but reality proved that our persistence and hard work was well worth the effort.
Yung-ying's color of red, white and blue is based on the color palette of the nation flag, while its shape took on the design of the F-CK-1 Ching-kuo Indigenous Defense Fighter to allow low air-resistance and a high angle of attack. However, the structure of the jet has been re-designed to enhance its stability during taxiing, while its parting line has been lifted to increase the amount of fuel that it can carry, allowing the jet to remain airborne for longer.
Up till now, having a 55 percent portion made locally is considered a very high ratio in the industry of aircraft manufacturing. Regarding some technical parts, such as the aviation control software that you can't see, or the power moderating software - these core fundamental software - it's all 100 percent owned by us.
The new Advanced Jet Trainer "Yung-ying" is expected to make its first flight in June 2020. In the future, it could also potentially replace the AT-3 Advanced Jet Trainers and F-5 Jet Trainers to help streamline the current flight training procedure from a three-phase, three types of jet training to a three-phase, two types of jet program.
