Failure to Report Measles, Faces Up to NT$300K Fine|染麻疹又找友人唱KTV 散布病毒開罰
A case of imported measles had been confirmed in Kaohsiung but the patient did not report to health authorities about his whereabouts during the infected period. Two of his friends have been confirmed with measles. The patient is now facing a NT$60,000 to NT$300,000 Fine.
Screening stations have be xen set up in Kaohsiung city for possible Measles symptoms. A cluster of measles was confirmed amongst Tigerair flight attendants last year. However, the city recently found another confirmed case of cluster infection. A man surnamed Kuo went to Cambodia for work and was infected with measles but did not honestly report the people who he had come into contact with during that period.
As of October 14th, the city of Kaohsiung had received reports of 2 suspected measles cases. After our investigation, we found that these two people had come in contact with Kuo on October 2nd.
The Kaohsiung Department of Health said Kuo was working in Cambodia from June to the end of September and had experienced symptoms of fever but was not confirmed with measles until the beginning of October. However when the health authorities were investigating the infections, this patient did not report the fact that he went to KTV with four of his friends during this period. Later on, two of the four friends were confirmed with measles which prompted the health authorities to carry out a cross-examination. Kuo was then confirmed to be the source of infection.
If the patient in this imported measles case had honestly reported his travel history and contact history, then the 76 people who have come in contact with him could be free of monitoring.
Though this patient had already recovered, because he had hidden the truth about the infection, thus increased the number of people who had come into contact with him to 76 people, he would be facing a fine from NT$60,000 up to NT$300,000. This cluster infection would be monitored until November 3rd. The Department of Health reminds the public that measles is highly contagious, one can easily be infected in a closed space. It also reminds the public to be vaccinated before going to measles-affected places. If one does get infected, he or she needs to implement self-health management.
