Attack on Han Kuo-yu Raises Security Concerns|韓台南造勢遭丟雞蛋抗議 引發維安疑慮
Protestors threw eggs at Kuomintang presidential candidate and Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu during a campaign rally in Tainan on Oct. 19. This led to questions about why security was so lacking. National Security Bureau Director-General Chiu Chui-cheng said on Oct. 21 that he opposes "irrational actions" and also stressed that under the government's plan, Han will not get a special security detail until he formally registers for the presidential election on Nov. 18. Chiu said at that time, Han and his running mate would get a 55-member security team.
Protestors getting close enough to Kuomintang presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu to throw eggs at him during a campaign rally in Tainan on the 19th is raising eyebrows. National Security Bureau Director-General Chiu Kuo-cheng didn't address the issue until two days later, saying he opposes "irrational actions." Chiu also said national security personnel are eligible for up to NT$5 million in bonuses for doing their jobs.
It's not like they automatically get NT$5 million for taking a bullet. It's included. If they get injured (on the job), we have a certain standard. Everyone will discuss it and then an assessment will be made and (a decision) issued for both compensation and bonuses.
Asked by the media if the bureau would provide presidential candidates with a security detail earlier than scheduled in light of the egg incident, Chiu said candidates would only get their 55-member security team after formally registering for the election on Nov. 18. Over 300 bureau personnel will be trained. As for reports that China is trying to use the media and internet celebrities to influence the election, Chiu said the bureau already has a few leads involving well-known internet celebrities.
Some (of the internet celebrities) are very well known. We are continuing to look into it and we can see from a lot of information sources that the Chinese Communists are definitely attacking us with their internet army. There really are so many of these attacks on Taiwan ever year.
Chiu also said the Chinese internet army conducts tens of millions of attacks on Taiwan every year, including six million that impact national security. According to Chiu, the bureau will continue to keep a close watch on this front but there are no concerns because it is closely working with the National Police Agency and Investigation Bureau and is fully prepared for all eventualities.
