THSRC Reduces Rent for Station Retail Spaces|因應疫情衝擊 高鐵調降車站商場租金25%
Starting on April 1st, temperature checks will be carried out at Taiwan High Speed Rail stations. You will also have to wear a mask for the entire duration of the journey. Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation also promised to cut the rent for retail spaces in stations to alleviate their pressure.
The high speed rail station is practically devoid of passengers, and there are few customers in the retail spaces inside the station. On March 31, Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation announced that it will progressively reduce the rent for these station retail spaces in order to relieve the pressure on proprietors. It will use the passenger volume for the same period last year as a criteria to adjust rents.
We compared the passenger volume in February to that of the same period in 2019, and found that the passenger volume fell by 27 percent. It doesn't matter whether the businesses are rental car agencies or selling daily necessities, the example I just mentioned will be applicable to all of them. This means that for February, there will be a 25 percent rent reduction.
The drop in passenger volume is due to COVID-19, and the epidemic shows no signs of slowing down. THSRC says it will peg rents to passenger volume until the latter recovers. In related news, Taiwan High Speed Rail has stepped up disease prevention and health promotion with the Qingming Festival long weekend just a few days away. Starting on April 1, anyone whose temperature is tested to be over 37.5 degrees Celsius while entering a station will not be allowed in. Meanwhile, passengers aboard trains will be required to wear masks for the full duration of the journey. People without masks will be guided towards shops inside the station that sell PU masks. There will no longer be free seating on trains, and people will be required to sit in the seats indicated on their tickets. Passengers will be reminded regularly to keep their masks on.
At present, with regards to masks, there is no special law that allows for incompliance, but as I just said, if our passengers have special reasons, we can provide special assistance.
THSR currently sells hot coffee and tea aboard its trains, but will stop selling them starting on April 7. It will only offer bottled water and packaged drinks. In response to the declining passenger volume, it is also organizing "lunchbox markets" at stations and working with popular restaurants to offer lunchboxes.
