MOFA Fully Supports the Military After Navy's Infection |開放民眾登艦外交部不知情? 外長:支持國軍
The Ministry of Defense has modified its remarks several times on the movement of the Navy's Goodwill Fleet after news broke that several of its officers on board were infected with COVID-19. This inconsistency however, caused speculations that the ministry has not been honest.
After news broke that several naval officers and personnel on board the Goodwill Fleet were infected with COVID-19, the Ministry of Defense had said that the Goodwill Fleet did not open to the public when it was in Palau. However, now it has changed its previous remarks by saying that overseas Taiwanese nationals did board the ship to participate in a flag-raising ceremony. This has sparked questions of concealment and whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) were notified before the event. The Minister of MOFA Joseph Wu stressed that the Ministry is in full cooperation with the Military drills and exercises and said that he fully supports the Military, twice.
The Military defends our country. It is our most important backbone troops. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cooperates and supports the Military fully.
Wu also reported the results of the face mask diplomacy in the Legislative Yuan. As of now, Taiwan has donated twice with a total of 17 million face masks to countries in need and many of which have expressed gratitude towards Taiwan. But many are voicing the need to establish diplomatic relations before donating the masks.
The goal of donating face masks to other countries is to offer help amid the coronavirus crisis, therefore we don't have any other political agenda in mind.
KMT legislator questioned the mask donation to New Southward Countries including Vietnam when the country has donated 550,000 masks to European countries including France a while ago. In other words, Taiwan is helping Vietnam to implement mask diplomacy. Minister Wu stressed that the MOFA did inquire about the demands before sending out the masks.
Are you sure that Vietnam needs face masks from us? If so, why did it donate masks to European countries and Japan? We inquired Vietnam or it contacted us directly about the need.
The population of Vietnam is about 90 million, but its mask production per day is only around 5 million. There is an actual need in Vietnam, therefore, we've discussed with each other and reached a mutually beneficial and reciprocal arrangement.
While Taiwan is being praised internationally for its efforts in disease prevention, the Ministry of Defense is planning to promote the country by shooting a video, but Wu said it is still hard for Taiwan to be invited to the World Health Assembly (WHA) this year. The Ministry has submitted the official proposal through countries with diplomatic relations and hopes the countries with similar philosophies can unite to strive for the opportunity to be included in the Assembly.
