Tsai Expresses Grief over Death of "Mr. Democracy"|蔡稱李登輝"民主先生" 帶領台灣走出威權
President Tsai Ing-wen expressed her condolences upon learning about Lee's death. She called Lee "Mr. Democracy" and said he led Taiwan out of the era of martial law into democracy. Former President Chen Shui-bian said he was unable to sleep all night after hearing the news but that even though Lee is gone, his stance on Taiwan will never die. Former President Ma Ying-jeou also thanked Lee for his contributions.
Everyone knows former President Lee was "Mr. Democracy." During the era of globalization, he led peaceful reforms to bring Taiwan out of the era of martial law into democracy. During this time, he also ensured Taiwan's economic health and prosperity. He was responsible for Taiwan's democratic miracle and that is how he will be remembered.
President Tsai Ing-wen expressed her grief immediately after the death of former President Lee Teng-hui, saying Lee was "Mr. Democracy" and led Taiwan out of the era of martial law. Former President Chen Shui-bian said he was deeply upset by the news and couldn't sleep all night. Chen called Lee the captain of the ship of Taiwan's democracy and said everyone has to stand united to move forward without Lee.
I am extremely saddened and upset. Former President Lee was not just an extremely -- so-called politician. He was also a well-respected theologian and philosopher.
Asked if he would pay his respects to Lee, Chen said he remains out of prison on medical parole and he wants to see if Lee can watch over him from heaven. In a statement, former President Ma Ying-jeou praised Lee's contributions to Taiwan's democracy and the nation. Ma said while his political views changed after he left the Presidential Office, Lee's contributions were significant and he hopes history will treat Lee justly and objectively. Premier Su Tseng-chang, meanwhile, said Lee was provincial governor when he first entered politics and he will always be grateful to Lee for his contributions.
Even in his hospital room, you could see his heart was full of Taiwan. Today, the philosopher has left us. Former President Lee had amazing, fascinating, and moving life. I thank him for his contributions.
Su says he will work with the presidential task force on Lee's funeral arrangements.
