Gov't Has Done Amazing Job Against Corruption Scandal: Premier|立委涉賄案 蘇揆:欣慰行政團隊堅守防線
Three incumbent lawmakers across different parties have been detained in connection with a bribery case. Among them, DPP's Su Chen-ching is alleged to have taken NT$20 million from Lee Heng-lung to win the ownership of the Sogo department stores. Su's uncle, DPP heavyweight Su Jia-chyuan has stepped down as Presidential Office secretary-general. When asked about the party's involvement in the bribery case, Premier Su Tseng-chang says the situation is "regrettable" but there is a "firewall" within the legislature to prevent individual lawmakers from inserting special favors or too much control over legislation.
Premier Su Tseng-chang dons some augmented reality glasses to try to understand modern technology. Asked about the corruption scandal rocking the legislature and lawmakers asking for corporate bribes while revising the Company Act, Su said it was extremely regrettable.
I am filled with regret to see something like this happen. However, I am comforted that the (Tsai) administration can hold its bottom line. At the same time, the leadership mechanisms of our Democratic Progressive Party can keep a strict watch on things. Therefore, in the end the parties involved in the bribery don't succeed.
Su had nothing but praise for the Democratic Progressive Party administration and party leadership despite the party's involvement in the scandal. DPP lawmaker Su Chen-ching, the nephew of just-resigned Presidential Secretary-General Su Jia-chyan, has been charged with taking NT$20 million in bribes. Su Jia-chyuan resigned from his post after the scandal broke to "prove his innocence." President Tsai Ing-wen wasted no time in approving his resignation. Su will be replaced by Straits Exchange Foundation Chair David Lee. Su Tseng-chang says Lee is very qualified for the post.
For me personally, my close relationship with the president over the past year or so has proven to me that her personnel choices are beyond reproach and there are no party faction concerns. The presidential secretary-general is there to help the president. It is a very natural situation. (He) is a very suitable candidate.
Su Tseng-chang has previously boasted about his ability to utilize talent. During the last state-owned bank executive reshuffle, Su ensured Liao Tsan-chang was appointed the new chair of First Financial Holding. Liao has now been indicted for corruption in the Far Eastern Air Transport embezzlement case and Su is washing his hands of him, saying he will not protect Liao.
Has he done illegal things in the past? The reality is I can't possibly know everything he does. Regardless, Liao Tsan-chang has already resigned. If anyone involved has criminal liability, we won't protect them.
Liao's has resigned from his post in the wake of his indictment, making him the first person to resign as the chair of a public bank twice. Su's employment philosophies have been thrown into question.
