PFP, NP Members Depart for Straits Forum|國民黨不去海峽論壇 親.新2黨未缺席
The Kuomintang is not sending a delegation to attend the Straits Forum. However, People First Party adviser Li Jian-nan and New Party Chairperson Wu Cherng-dean are attending, as well as a former deputy chairperson of the KMT's Mainland Affairs Department in his capacity as a Taiwan businessperson.
The Kuomintang previously announced it will not send a delegation to attend the Straits Forum in China. However, People First Party adviser Li Jian-nan and New Party Chairperson Wu Cherng-dean are attending, and they departed together from Taoyuan International Airport on Sept. 16, wearing ties in the colors of their respective parties.
I'm representing the People First Party. I'm going not to sue for peace, but to find a peaceful road for joint cross-strait studies.
(Does the party central committee know you're attending the Straits Forum?) I'm attending in my capacity as a Taiwan businessperson.
A former deputy chairperson of the KMT's Mainland Affairs Department kept a low profile, while KMT member and former Hualien City Mayor Wei Mu-tsun happily posed for cameras. The KMT canceled its plans to attend the forum after a CCTV anchor reported that Taiwan was attending in order to sue for peace and no apology was forthcoming. KMT Secretary-General Lee Chien-lung previously said that the other side had drafted an apology, but the Taiwan Affairs Office said there is no such thing.
This so-called apology statement does not exist, so this is not factual at all. The main reason why this incident ended with this result is because of the treacherous political situation and vile political ecology in Taiwan.
China said Taiwan's politics were the reason why the KMT is not participating in the 12th Straits Forum. It also said this forum is a non-governmental forum, and there will be exchanges and cooperation as long as both sides participate. Democratic Progressive Party lawmakers disagreed.
I think it's more important to rein in the horse at the edge of the precipice, and stopping all participation is the best policy.
We heard the voices of the people, and we of course have to view cross-strait exchanges as an important issue in moving forward. It's a difficult position for the Kuomintang.
The KMT decided not to participate in the forum as a party to quell opposition from inside and outside the party.
Former KMT Legislator Apollo Chen was not surprised by the turn of events. He said this is because the party's decision-making methods are changing, and China needs to perceive this.
