KMT Protests US Pork with Legislative Boycott|立院停擺! 抗議萊豬 藍委杯葛蘇揆備詢
The Kuomintang boycotted the legislative session on Oct. 13 in protest of the administration's unilateral decision to open up Taiwan to imports of U.S. pork and beef containing ractopamine, preventing the interpellation of Premier Su Tseng-chang. The Taiwan People's Party then condemned the KMT boycott and demanded that the Executive Yuan revoke the executive order allowing U.S. pork and beef.
The Kuomintang placed props showing its opposition to the Tsai Ing-wen administration's unilateral decision to open up Taiwan to imports of U.S. pork and beef containing ractopamine on the legislative floor on Oct. 13. This boycott prevented the scheduled interpellation of Executive Yuan officials. Premier Su Tseng-chang was to give an administrative report, but the KMT occupied the rostrum and demanded an apology from Su before it would cede the rostrum.
Not allowing me to go up there and give my report is not only going back on your word, but also equal to obstructing the people's right to know.
No one can accept the import of ractopamine pork, so we cannot allow Su Tseng-chang to go up there for an interpellation if the Democratic Progressive Party government continues to fail to offer a satisfactory explanation.
The Taiwan People's Party criticized the KMT for holding a boycott and preventing legislators from questioning officials. It also criticized the Democratic Progressive Party for making a U-turn on this issue once it achieved power. The TPP proposed implementing a way to manage imported pork at the source and adding new product codes. It is scheduled to ask the Executive Yuan to revoke the two executive orders relaxing restrictions on U.S. pork on Oct. 14.
The Taiwan People's Party caucus will propose the revocation of these two announcements. What concerns everyone is whether the Food and Drug Administration is ready and whether the Customs Administration is ready to test.
I don't think anyone can understand why the KMT occupied the rostrum today. Right now, the premier and all the ministers are waiting inside the legislature.
On Oct. 12, the legislature's Finance Committee passed a resolution to increase the number of CCC codes assigned to pork imports in order to differentiate between pork containing ractopamine and pork without ractopamine, and offal from pork containing ractopamine and from pork without ractopamine. In response, Economic Affairs Minister Wang Mei-hua said this was not possible because she thinks it violates international standards.
