Taiwan to Spend US$1.8 Billion on US Arms|美正式宣布對台3項軍售 總值＄18億
The U.S. government announced three arms packages for Taiwan on Oct. 21, with values totaling US$1.8 billion.
The U.S.' Defense Security Cooperation Agency issued press releases on Oct. 21 announcing that the State Department has approved three arms packages for Taiwan. They include 11 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems M142 launchers, 135 AGM-84H Standoff Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response missiles, and six MS-110 Recce Pods. The total cost of the arms is US$1.8 billion. The U.S. Congress has been notified, and the sale is expected to go through after one month's time.
This is the eighth arms sale to Taiwan to be announced since President Trump took office. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes this and would like to thank the U.S. government for taking concrete actions to fulfill the Taiwan Relations Act, the Six Assurances to Taiwan, and its commitment to Taiwan's safety.
The Presidential Office also thanked the U.S. for helping Taiwan to shore up its defensive capabilities, and said it will continue to defend regional peace and stability alongside the U.S. National Defense Minister Yen De-fa said additional arms deals are still being discussed and there will be more in the future. He added that these purchases are for defensive purposes, not to enter into an arms race with China. Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Wu said during an interview with Indian media that Taiwan stands on the frontline of efforts to prevent China from spreading its authoritarian ideology, and arms deals show that Taiwan is determined to defend itself.
So we have been trying to beef up our own defense capabilities to prevent China from thinking that they can take Taiwan over very quickly. And we also try to procure military hardware from other countries like the United States and we also try to work together with other countries for security areas.
Wu said he is willing to deepen cooperation with India and other like-minded countries, and Taiwan will carefully handle the cross-strait relationship to prevent China from using Taiwan as a scapegoat for what he called its internal governance crisis resulting from the China-U.S. trade war, the epidemic, and other issues.
